Why the spiritually mature are leaving church

March 1st, 2006 · 1 Comment

I’ve promoted before the excellent blog from Leadership magazine, Out of Ur. An excellent article there called Exit Stage Left: Why the Spiritually Mature are Leaving the Church caught my eye. At first I thought it would criticize the seeker sensitivity of the boomer mega churches, but it doesn’t. Instead it points out that all churches, big and small, old, new and postmodern seem to be able to take people only so far. The article makes some good points, but I wonder if being spiritually mature and leaving the church aren’t contradictions.

I can think of two things that contribute to this problem. The first is that in the twentieth century, we actively divided people into generations, as if age alone makes people foreign to each other. The second is the culture of paid retirement, something that was virtually unknown a few generations ago. It has led to a feeling that as we get older, we can say, “I did my part, it’s up to the younger folks to carry the load now.” How unfortunate! It is now difficult for churches to get elders who are truly “elder,” because they want to retire. Spiritual retirement is accomplished when It Is Finished.
