Andy Stanley: When pleasure makes faith inconvenient

May 20th, 2008 · 1 Comment

“The pleasures of life will eventually cause almost every single element of your belief system to become inconvenient. In order to continue believing, you’re going to have to give up some pleasure. And if your faith is purely circumstantial, you will opt for pleasure over faith every single time, and you’ll adjust your belief system to match your lifestyle.”
Andy Stanley, in the sermon Faith, Hope and Luck: Better Odds.

I highly recommend Andy Stanley’s preaching. This particular sermon, the first in a series on the foundations of faith, is available here. In it, Andy Stanley shows the weakness of faith that is based only on experiences or unbiblical expectations about God. Solid teaching.

Thank you for guiding me to this series. “God is not asking me to trust him based on the ability to figure him out.” If I can just put this into practice, how much more peaceful my life will be. And I will have much more time to stop and smell his roses.
